  General Notes:

She used the name Wilhelmena Garlipp on her first marriage license. The name Wilhelmina D. Wall was shown on only one deed. She used the name Mina Koch on her second marriage license. She always signed her papers Minna Wall and was called Minnie. Tombstone shows Minnie.

Minna was listed in her stepfather's family as though her last name were Koch on the 1870 census in Austin County, Texas. By the time of the 1900 census, she had been married 24 years to Mike Wall. She had borne 11 children with 9 still living. On the 1910 she indicated that this was her second marriage. She had borne 11 children with 8 still living.

Recollections of Lera Sophie Wall as told to her daughter Essie Mae Thompson Haisler: Minnie Wall was the "doctor" for the Spicewood area since there were no licensed doctors available at the time. She received training from German doctors. She made her own medicines from various plants and other sources (one source being the whitish mass from the droppings of chickens.) During cold winter, Minnie would wrap heated bricks to help keep warm while driving the buggy to a sick neighbor.

Minnie probably saved more lives with the use of proper diets and sanitation than with medicine. Tables were to be scrubbed daily along with the floors. Food was to be washed thoroughly before cooking. Even walls and windows were cleaned regularly. She used several aprons a day (would always change into clean apron when one got dirty). Bandages were made from cloth, washed in boiling water, then sun dried. They were then rolled into bundles and sterilized in the oven. Germs never stood a chance in Minnie's house.

The respect of the local people for Minnie was so great that when a licensed doctor settled in the area, they still came to Minnie for help. Minnie tried to convince them to see the licensed doctor. Many wanted her to continue to be their doctor, but she stood her ground and sent them to the trained doctor. Minnie was generous with her help, and I never recall her mentioning that she was ever paid or even expected to be paid for her services.

Minnie could read and write English and German, plus she was noted to be a business woman as well as a mid-wife.

Obituary in Marble Falls Messenger, Sep. 1917: She had been a member of the Methodist church since early girlhood and had always lived a consistent Christian life.

Mike and Minnie Wall had a joint will which left the estate to each other until both were deceased then to their children including a child's portion divided among the children of Minnie's daughter Annie Koch Shoults.

The 9 Jul 1997 copy of her death certificate gave the death date as 13 Sep 1917. The tombstone has 16 Sep 1917.
