Herman's age was listed as 6 on the 1900 census, 15 on the 1910 census, 25 on the 1920 census and 36 on the 1930 census. . His natural parents were born in Texas. It was reported incorrectly on the 1920 and 1930 census as Germany. His adoptive father was born in Germany, but his adoptive mother (his natural aunt) was born in Texas. His adoptive father's second wife was born in Germany. That may have caused the confusion for the census taker. On the 1930 census, he answered the language question intended for immigrants. He gave German as the language spoken in his home before coming to America.

When Herman registered for the WWI draft, he stated that he was a farmer working for August Bunte of Smithville. At the time of the 1930 census, Herman had been married for 9 years to Annie Kloth. He owned his home on a farm in Bastrop County, Texas He was a farming a general farm. He answered the veteran question indicating that he had served in WWI.

He was living in Smithville, Texas, in 1955.

Social Security Death Index has his death as May 1971. Texas Death Index and death certificate have it as 4 Jun 1971 Bastrop County, Texas. Social Security had his last residence as Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas.

Herman married Annie M. Kloth, daughter of John Kloth and Mary Koppenrath, on 15 Jan 1921. (Annie M. Kloth was born on 21 Jan 1899 in Columbus, Colorado County, Texas,10 died on 11 Feb 1969 in , Bastrop County, Texas 9 10 and was buried on 12 Feb 1969 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas 10.). The cause of her death was carcinomatosis.7
