At the time of the 1910 census, August was a farm laborer on the home farm in Wilbarger County, Texas. When August registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was farming for himself in Lometa, Lampasas County, Texas. He was single but said he was supporting his mother. He claimed an exemption because he was epileptic. The card was noted that his "mother is not dependent. He has father." He was living in his father's household in Williamson County, Texas, in 1920. No occupation was shown for him. At the time of the 1930 census, August was back in Wilbarger County, Texas. (He settled in Vernon.) He was 34 and had first married at 26. Children from that marriage in his household were Myrtle 7, and August 5. He had been married to Erna for one year He rented his home on a farm. He was farming a general farm.

His last residence was South Lockett, Wilbarger County, Texas. He had lived there 19 years.

August married Emma Ulbrich, daughter of Herman Ulbrich and Johanna Louise Weise, about 1920. The cause of her death was pellagra and tuberculosis. Child birth was a contributory factor..⁵
