Ernest enlisted as a Private in the Army on 15 May 1942 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. His enlistment record recorded that he had 2 years of high school and that his civilian occupation was semiskilled welder and flame cutter. His height was 69 inches and his weight 143 pounds. He was married.

He rose to the rank of second Lt. in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was a bombardier. He bombed Germany from a base in England. His plane, the "Ruptured Duck" was shot down over Kassel by German antiaircraft .
