At the time of the 1910 census, John was listed as a farm laborer. John's WWI draft registration on 5 Jun 1917 showed that he was farming for himself in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas. He had a wife and 4 children. At the time of the 1920 census, John was farming in Hall County, Texas. He rented his home. At the time of the 1930 census, son Lawrence was listed as head of household with the rest of the family under him. John was shown as a farm laborer in Hall County, Texas.

The second child listed as part of John's family in the 1930 census, Lula, was reported in her obituary as the child of his wife Iola and her first husband Allen Prince. She used the maiden name Prince on all her children's birth records also. It seems to follow that the first child, Lawrence, who used the name Kimbrow as head of household is John's son by a previous marriage also.

John married Iola Wright, daughter of John Wright and Nancy Dunseith, on 30 Mar 1914 in , Johnson County, Texas. (Iola Wright was born on 30 Mar 1890 in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas,⁷ died on 23 Jun 1981 in Garland, Dallas County, Texas ^{7 8} and was buried in Burleson Memorial Cemetery, Burleson, Johnson County, Texas ⁹.)
