On the 1870 census, Charles was living with his parents and brother Francis G. in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi. His parents' birthplace was shown as North Carolina. His father was farming. At the time of the 1880 census, Charles, Martha, adopted son John Casey, and children William and Lula May were living in Chewalla, Marshall County, Mississippi. His brother in law, W. E. Reid, was listed with them as a boarder.

At the time of the 1900 census, he was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Fort Bend County, Texas. His parents John Wofford, b. Mar 1815, and Melissa A. Bell, b. Jul 1817, were living with him. He gave inconsistent answers to his parents' birthplace over the years. When his parents were listed in his household in the 1900 census: both were shown as born in South Carolina.

By the time of the 1910 census, the family had moved to Floyd County, Texas, where Charles was paying a mortgage to own his farm. His occupation was listed as real estate agent. A boarder with the family was Joe F. Julian age 25. The family was listed in Lockney, Floyd County, Texas, on the 1920 census. Charles owned his home free of any mortgage. He was working as an automobile salesman. At the time of the 1930 census, Charles's home had a value of $2000. He was working as a doorman, land gatesman. (Hard to make the words out precisely.)

According to his death certificate, his occupation was land agent. His wife was the informant. She gave North Carolina as his birth place and well as for his parents. His last residence was Lockney, Floyd County, Texas. He had lived there 35 years.
