At the time of the 1900 census, Richard was a farm laborer in Travis County, Texas. He married Lillie "Willie" Hood, 13 May 1892-6 Mar 1964, on 4 May 1913. When he registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was farming for John Biggs. His nearest relative was his wife, Willie. They lived in Smithwick, Burnet County, Texas. At the time of the 1920 census, they were living in Burnet County, Texas, where Richard was farming. He rented his home. They had 3 children: Melvin 1914, Wilson R. 1916, and Ida 1918.

At the time of the 1930 census, the family was still in Burnet County and renting. Richard was hauling cedar posts for a living. His cousin John Anglin was in his household and working on a cedar brake. The children listed were Melvin, Wilson, Ida, Margaret born about 1921, Janie Pauline 1923, Bernetta Gaynelle 1925, and Edith Qemora 1927.
