Funeral services for E. Martin Noble, pioneer citizen who passed away August 14, were held at the late residence, Washington Avenue east, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. B. Scoles of Centerville. A large concourse gathered to pay respect for one who had been a friend to everyone, and many beautiful floral tributes express sympathy to the bereaved having charge of the services at the grave.

Edmond Martin Noble was born near Altoona, Penn., July 17, 1838, being the youngest of 10 children, he moved with his parents to Fairfield, Iowa when five years of age and lived on a farm until 1861. Upon being refused admission to the army on account of a defective eye, he, with five boy friends, joined a company of 100 men at Council Bluffs and crossed the plains to California, the trip taking almost five months. When on a prospecting tour in the company with these same five boys from Fairfield, they were attacked by Indians and Mr. Noble was the only survivor. Returning by the Isthmus of Panama in 1865, he came to Albia on the first C. B. Q. passenger train in 1866 and lived here continuously ever since.

He married to Ione Saunders, daughter of the late Captain Henry and Eliza Saunders, December 25, 1867. To this union were born four children, two of whom died in infancy. One married daughter, Mrs. Daisy Bell, passed on in 1911.

Mr. and Mrs. Noble joined the Methodist Church in their early married life under the pastorate of Rev. Stephenson. Deceased was for many years a member of the I. O. O. F. and A. O. U. W. Mrs. Noble preceded her husband in death three years ago. Since that time, Mr. Noble, has made him home with his daughter, Mrs. George Alexander, who, with her husband are the only surviving members of his immediate family left to mourn his death. His only nephew this side of California, Ed Ash, of Dallas City, Ill. was present at the funeral.

Mr. Noble retired from active business in 1912. While gradually failing as years passed he retained all of his faculties to the end. He was quiet and retiring, but greatly loved and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He spent much of the day Monday visiting with friends being in his ordinary health apparently. Death came unexpectedly about nine o'clock Thursday morning August 14, 1928 when a good man fell asleep and passed to his reward at the age of 90 years and 28 days.
