Koch was his family name. He changed it because of World War I with Germany, although he was listed in his father's household in 1920 with the original spelling.

At the time of the 1930 census, Emil was an employee at a filling station in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas. . He lived in his sister Viola and brother in law Frank Berg's home as a roomer. He was using the last name of Cook. He was shown as single. The census was taken in April. In December that year a son Charles Edward Cook was born to Emil Edward Cook and Mary Magdalane Walter in Williamson County, Texas. There was a Mary Walter, born about 1913 in Texas, living with her German born parents in Williamson County. I couldn't find any other Emil Cook or Koch married or single that could be the father of this child.--Rose Lee Wall 2009
