At the time of the 1910 census, he was a preacher living in Haskell County, Texas. Bertie's WWI draft registration showed that he was a Methodist minister serving the Chatfield circuit of churches. He had a wife and 3 children. He claimed an exemption in order to support his family. He was living in Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas. At the time of the 1920 census, he was a minister in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas. He rented his home. At the time of the 1930 census, Bertie was pastor of the Methodist Church in Coolidge, Limestone County, Texas. He owned his home valued at $2500. His widowed mother in law, Annie Wilshire, was living with the family.

Bertie married Maudie Mae Wilshire, daughter of Richard S. Wilshire and Annie Newsom, about 1908. (Maudie Mae Wilshire was born on 30 Jun 1886 in Texas,^{9 10} died on 26 Aug 1974 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas ^{9 10} and was buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas ⁹.). The cause of her death was cardio-respiratory failure, cardiac decompensation, arteriosclerosis cardiovascular disease.⁸
