At the time of the 1910 census, Charles and Mary were farming in Runnels County, Texas. He rented his farm. When Charles registered for the WWI draft on 10 Sep 1918 (1919 in error on the card), he was farming for himself in Electra, Wichita County, Texas. His wife, Mary Ella, was his nearest relative. At the time of the 1920 census, Charles was living back with his parents in Runnels County, Texas. He was widowed and had three daughters listed with him. He was a laborer on the home farm. The girl's mother was listed as born in Texas. At the time of the 1930 census, Charles was farming in Runnels County, Texas. He rented his home which was on a farm. He was married to Ruby and had 3 sons in addition to the 3 daughters listed earlier. Mrs. Raymond Schwarz was the informant on his death certificate.

Charles married Mary Ella Borders, daughter of J. S. Borders and Ernest Dennis. (Mary Ella Borders was born on 6 Mar 1892 in , Coleman County, Texas,⁸ died on 30 Jun 1919 in Electra, Wichita County, Texas ⁸ and was buried on 1 Jul 1919 in Electra Cemetery, Electra, Wichita County, Texas ⁸.). The cause of her death was heart failure, goiter.⁵

Charles next married Ruby Byrd Cox, daughter of Robert B. Cox and Frances Nowlin, about 1921. (Ruby Byrd Cox was born on 2 Dec 1895 in Oglesby, Coryell County, Texas,^{9 10} died on 27 Nov 1974 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas ^{9 10 11} and was buried on 28 Nov 1974 in Lakeview Cemetery, Winters, Runnels County, Texas ¹⁰.). The cause of her death was renal failure due to gastrointestinal hemorrhage caused by postoperative stress ulcer. She was being treated for intestinal obstruction and carcinoma of the left colon..⁵
