Charles immigrated to the United States in 1870 and became naturalized in 1872. His parents were also born in Wurtemberg, Germany. By the time of the 1900 census, Charles owned his farm in Runnels County, Texas, free of any mortgage. He continued to farm there through 1920 at least. On the 1930 census, no occupation is shown for him. According to his death certificate, he retired from farming in 1920 after 45 years.

Charles married Martha Caroline Bradley, daughter of James Walter Bradley and Mary Jane Blanton, about 1883. (Martha Caroline Bradley was born on 30 Jun 1860 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee,^{7 8} died on 12 Jan 1945 in Talpa, Runnels County, Texas ⁸ and was buried on 13 Jan 1945 in Crews Cemetery, Winters, Runnels County, Texas ^{8 9}.). The cause of her death was old age.⁵
