Samuel became a lawyer and in 1870 joined forces with William Clement Gillihan under the law firm name of Gillihan & Brosius. That name became a household word in Daviess County, Missouri, through a period of 32 years. At the time of the 1900 census, Samuel was a loan agent in Union, Daviess County, Missouri. He was divorced and living alone. He rented his home. He withdrew from Gillihan & Brosius in 1902 and moved to Colorado. By 1910, he had returned to Missouri and settled in Oregon County, near the Arkansas border, where he was engaged in the real estate business and lived until his death. At the time of the 1920 census, he was widowed and taking care of his grandchildren, Murray and Martha, in Piney, Oregon County, Missouri. At the time of the 1930 census, Samuel was boarding with J. Ed. and Della Johnson in Alton, Oregon County, Missouri. The record showed that he was a retired lawyer, divorced, and that he was a civil war veteran.

Samuel married Inez T. Evans, daughter of James W. Evans and Anna B. Davis, on 20 Dec 1870.1 (Inez T. Evans was born on 10 Jun 1852 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee,1 11 died on 25 Jun 1929 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee 14 and was buried on 27 Jun 1929 in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.). The cause of her death was myocardial failure.12
