Samuel was highly inconsistent in giving his age for the census. In 1850 census, he gave his age as 38, born in Virginia. The entire family was shown as born in Virginia. He was farming in Cooper County, Missouri. In 1860 census, he gave his age as 47, born in Maryland. The rest of the family was shown as born in Virginia. He was farming in Moniteau County, Missouri. He had personal assets of $200. There was a new girl since the 1850 census, Margaret Brosius, 11, born in Pennsylvania. Not likely to be his child. (The race column was not filled in on that page, but she may be the same person as Margaret Jones in his family in 1880 although the ages don't work out right.)
In 1880 census, he gave age as 66, born in Virginia, parents born in Maryland. He was farming in Moniteau County, Missouri. He had a 12 year old Negro farm laborer, James Crum, and a 25 year old Negro servant girl, Margaret Jones, with her one year old son, William, in his household. In 1900 census, he was widowed and living with widowed daughter Catherine and her 7 children in Prairie Home, Cooper County, Missouri. His birth date was given as Feb 1811.
On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the newspaper reported that "Mrs. Isaac Tindall, a colored woman who lived with Mr. Brosius and others of the family from the time she was 12 years old until she married, was present, helping the family in preparing the dinner." This was probably, the Margaret reported in the 1860 and/or 1880 census.
