  General Notes:

The records of Rev. E. H. Brosius and Dr. William Lewis Brosius cover only the descendants of this couple, to which has been added material furnished by Lillian Brosius White of Leesburg, Virginia, and others. He became a hotel keeper in Pennsylvania. (Note: the Pennsylvania connection is not conclusive because of conflicting information from various sources especially 2 books of baptisms and marriages which are translations of the original German records for the Christ Lutheran Church in Stouchsburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The dates for the Jacob Brosius and Cattarine Numan there differ significantly from the ones given elsewhere.)

Transcript of the Last Will and Testament of Jacob Brosius, Dated 10 September 1821

Transcribed on 8 November 2009 by Vincent M Prichard, 4th great-grandson of Jacob Brosius (1744-1822)

[Transcriber's note: I made this transcription from a photocopy of the recorded version of the will provided by Ms. Rosalie Godfrey of Greensboro, North Carolina. The will is recorded in Will Book C at pages 233 & 234 held in the Washington County Courthouse, Hagerstown, Maryland. The recorded version of the will has none of the blank lines used in this transcription to separate subjects.

The Last Will and Testament of -
Jacob Brosius, deceased

In the Name of God, Amen.

I, Jacob Brosius of Washington County in the State of Maryland, being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me home, do therefore make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say, -

First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executrix hereinafter named, and after my debts and funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows -

I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph his Heirs or assigns my negro boy slave named Robert.

Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Sally Blackwell and her heirs or assigns my negro boy slave named Osburn.

Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Kitty Graves and her heirs or assigns my negro boy slave named Hanson,

and whereas the property which I now possess hath been chiefly acquired by the Joint industry and frugality of my dear wife and myself, I do therefore give and bequeath unto my said wife during her natural life all the rest and residue of my estate, both real and personal, and after her death, I give and devise my said estate both real and personal to be sold and to be equally divided among my eight children, George, Jacob, Samuel, John, Jo

[From Page 234] seph, Kitty, Elizabeth and Sally to them their heirs and assigns forever in equal portions share and share alike.

And lastly I do hereby constitute my dear wife Kitty Brosius to be sole Executrix of this my last will and Testament revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my Last will and Testament.

In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this Tenth day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Twenty-One.
