In the 1880 census, he gave his and his parent's birthplaces as Virginia. He was farming. At the time of the 1900 census, he was a day laborer. He rented his home and had been unemployed for 4 months in the last year. In 1910 he gave his occupation as painter and paperer in the village. In 1920 he had no occupation. He was a widower with his daughter Bessie living with him.

The death certificate has the birth date of 5 Mar 1849, age 79 years, 3 months, 24 days, death 29 Jun 1926. Based on the age at death the birth year would be 1847.
