His parents were Dr Sherwood A. Owens, born in Kentucky, and Lucy Jane Thurman, born in Virginia. They share a tombstone with James and Lizzie. They were part of his household at the time of the 1900 census along with his uncle Robert Thurman and cousin William Owens. James was a farmer in Mills County, Texas. At the time of the 1910 census, he was a stock farmer in Mills County, Texas. His father in law James Davis, born in Georgia, was part of his household. At the time of the 1920 census, James was a farmer in Mills County. He was paying a mortgage on his home.

There is a memorial stained glass window for Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Owens at Center City United Methodist Church.

James married Amanda Elizabeth Davis, daughter of James Madison Davis and Francis Breese Penick, about 1888. (Amanda Elizabeth Davis was born on 26 Jan 1865 in Crockett, Houston County, Texas,^{4 7} died on 7 Feb 1954 in , Mills County, Texas ^{4 7} and was buried on 8 Feb 1954 in Center City Cemetery, Center City, Mills County, Texas ^{7 8}.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of colon/senility.⁵
