She was raised in the household of Uncle Gustav Koch after the death of her father. By the time of the 1910 census, Hilda had borne 5 children all still living. She gave her father's birthplace as the United States and her mother's as Germany. On the 1920 census, she said she had married at age 16.
She worked as a college house mother.

The cause of his death was senile hypertrophy of prostate, pulmonary infarction.7
