At the time of the 1900 census, August was a farmer in Milam County, Texas. He rented his farm. He indicated that his parents were born in Germany. His birth date was given as Aug 1856. By the time of the 1910 census, August owned his farm in Milam County, Texas, free of any mortgage. It was listed as a stock farm. By the time of the 1930 census, August was widowed. He was listed with his son Ben's family in Milam County, Texas.

From Rockdale Reporter, 3 Jul 1930:
August Kraatz, pioneer citizen of Sharp community, dies after extended illness.

Sharp, Texas, July 1. On last Thursday, June 26, death relieved of his sufferings one of our oldest and best loved citizens, August Kraatz. Mr. Kraatz was born in Austin County seventy-three years ago, but lived in this vicinity about forty-five years.

The funeral was held at the Murray Cemetery Friday, June 26 and was attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives, the Rev. Geo. E. Pentecost reading the funeral rites.

Decedent leaves the following immediate members of his family; Otto Kraatz of Rockdale, Wm Kraatz of Placedo, brothers. Mesdames Wm Luetge, Sharp; Chas Seelke, Rockdale; Geo Doss, Gay Hill; and Mrs. Busler, Galveston, sisters. All of the above named except Mrs Busler, were present at his funeral.

Mr. Kraatz passed away at the old home place now the place of his son, Ben, who gave him every attention possible during his illness.

He was married to Mrs. Annie Galler (Garlipp) and to this reunion were both two sons, Ben of Sharp and Fritz, of Winters. Seventeen grandchildren survive him.
