General Notes:
Source: Annie's obituary in "The Telegram-Reveille" 16 & 23 Mar 1917 Nickname - Annie Buried in the Rose Hill cemetery next to her husband, Fred, in Rifle, CO. Annie was of the Catholic faith.
Annie suffered from a stroke of apoplexy on 13 Mar and then died Thursday March 15, 1917. She came to Colorado in 1883 and married Fred in a couple of years. At the time of her death she was survived by her two sisters, one of whom resides in Longmont, Boulder Co., CO and the other in New York.
Phyllis George (Hall) has a lot more information on Annie, but is not yet releasing it (this is true as of 18 Aug 1996).
Anna was a small red haired, blue eyed woman and an excellent house keeper. She grew up in a poverty environment with little education. Hard work was about all they had and she was on her own before age sixteen. She came to Colorado and miraculously became six years younger. Her date of birth was really 1854 instead of 1860 and all New York records show the first and Colorado records show the later. She was 29 years old when she got married so this probably had something to do with becoming younger. Her marriage to Fred, a Protestant Englishman, her being Irish Catholic, was said to have caused her family to literally disown her. I think a problem existed but the marriage was not the root of it.
Her sister, Nellie, married a Catholic and stayed active in the church, but like Anna, she had no contact with the family either. Noted in Anna's obituary two sisters are mentioned as surviving her. She had a younger brother that I believe she never knew about. Harry was born in 1881 after she came to Colorado, but I have found no mention of him in this state. She was notified when her brother Patrick died in 1886.
When Ruth George was born, on Feb. 1917, she spent about a month with her daughter Clarissa helping her out. The following letter was written between the time she returned home and her death.
Rifle Colo., March 8, 1917

Yours recd. yesterday one package. You must be like Sardines in a box. Nine is sure a houseful. We have not seen the kids since Monday last so don't know if they are going to use the incubator or not. As soon as we get a chance we are coming over. The red calico has not come yet, may get it today. As soon as she gets the two suits made she will send them to you. I have to get over there soon or I will loose out on the new girl. Mail time, I will have to skip.
Love to all, Dad.
