  General Notes:

Funeral Services Held for Duncan
Services were held Tuesday for Wesley E. Duncan, 53, a prominent Cameron Businessman who was killed early Sunday in a two-vehicle crash near Rosebud.

The Rev. Jim McPhail and the Rev. Earl McIntyre officiated the services at the First United Methodist Church in Cameron. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

The accident in which Duncan died also claimed the life of a 47 year old Fort Worth woman. Five others were sent to area hospitals for treatment, including Duncan's wife, Betsy Duncan. (Betsy was the driver of their pickup and was the only one in the accident wearing a seatbelt. She was released after observation.)

A long-time Cameron developer and entrepreneur, Duncan was involved in the construction of several major local projects, including the Winnie L. Nursing Facility, the Oak Senior Estates apartment complex, and the Varsity Motel in Cameron. A partner in KRXT-FM radio station in Rockdale, Duncan also helped develop the Pecan Orchard subdivision in Cameron.

He was also a homebuilder, landowner and was active in civic and church affairs.

Duncan was born Jan. 4, 1939 in Marshall to Mary Angeline (Wall) Duncan and W. C. Duncan. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1957.

He played football for Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1957 and was on the national championship football team at Texarkana Junior College in 1958.

Duncan received his Bachelor of Science degree in business and economics from Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches in 1961 and he received his Masters in Education mid management from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. in 1975.

Duncan taught and coached for 16 years in the public school systems in Palestine, Westward, Brenham, Granger and Snyder. He also served as an assistant principal at Snyder High School.

He and his family moved to Cameron in 1977 where he became a builder, contractor and entrepreneur.

Duncan was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cameron for 16 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the church administrative board, the parsonage committee and on the pastor-parish relations board.

He was also active in the community, serving as a Cameron school board member, a member of the child day care board, the Yoe High Booster Club and was a member of the Cameron volunteer ambulance service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Mary Angeline Duncan; a brother, Bill Duncan; and, a sister, Mary Katherine Nelson.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy Duncan, three sons, Ernest Duncan of Houston; Brent Duncan of Belton; and Daryl Duncan of Cameron; a sister, Jon Ann Simon of Marshall, and two brothers, Clyde Duncan of Greenville and James Duncan of Texarkana; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Duncan Scholarship Fund, at the First National Bank in Cameron. The scholarship fund will assist underprivileged students in gaining a higher education.
