Ruth Obenhaus Howard Browning, 97, of Brownwood, TX left this life and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday March 8, 2016. Funeral services, under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home, were held 2:00 p.m. Friday March 11, 2016, at the First Baptist Church of Brownwood with Bro. Bill Slaymaker officiating. A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early, TX. Ruth Pauline Obenhaus was born January 7, 1919, in Goldthwaite Texas to Laura (Miles) and Edward Arnold Obenhaus. She attended Goldthwaite schools along with eight brothers and sisters.

After graduating, Ruth worked for her brother, Ernest, as a bookkeeper in a furniture store in Bartlett, Texas. This is where she met her first husband, H. D. (Curly) Howard. They married June 21, 1936 in Bartlett. Their daughter, Sue Jane, was born about two years later in Temple. A son, Hal Don, joined the family after they moved to Brownwood.

Ruth was very active in the First Baptist Church. She worked in Sunday School and Training Union, and played the piano for every age level for 60 years. Curly passed away in 1983 and she later married Joe Bob Browning. She and Joe Bob were married 31 years and continued to live in Brownwood. Ruth spent 18 wonderful years in Accounting at Howard Payne University and she enjoyed working there a great deal.

Ruth is survived by husband, Joe Bob Browning; son, Don Howard of Early; daughter, Kathy Rodgers and husband Bob of Brownwood; daughter-in-law, Mary Browning of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; special friend, Nancy Schwab; grandchildren, Marci Fowlkes and husband J, Brantley Browning, Jennifer Flentge and husband Doug, Kevin Rodgers and wife Shannon, Jason Rodgers and wife Bridget, and Corby Rodgers and wife Brandy; great grandchildren, Jordan Fowlkes and wife Kelly, Megan Linley and husband Billy, Courtney Hansen and husband Albert, Hayden Fowlkes and wife Sarah, and Morgan Elliott, 16 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, H.D. "Curly" Howard; daughter, Sue McCurry; son, Bob Browning; parents, Ed and Laura Obenhaus; sisters, Myrtle Touchstone, Lollie Daniel, Bobbie Massey, Atara Cryer, Opal Obenhaus, and Belva Howard; brothers, Gus Obenhaus, Ernest Obenhaus, and Pat Obenhaus; grandchildren, Mark McCurry and Susan McCurry Elliott.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Building Fund, First Baptist Church, 208 Austin Avenue, Brownwood, TX, 76801. ⁶

Ruth married Harvey Dow Howard. (Harvey Dow Howard was born in 1915, died in 1983 and was buried in Eastlawn Memorial Park, Early, Brown County, Texas ⁷.)

Ruth next married Joe Bob Browning.
