  General Notes:

Charles was listed in his father's household in the 1850 and 1860 census. Couldn't locate him on his own in the 1870 census. By the time of the 1880 census, he had been in Texas at least 8 years (He married in Texas and that's where his children were born.) He had 3 daughters. He was a farmer in Hamilton County. He was listed in Mills County, Texas, in the 1900 census. This may not have been a move because Mills was formed out of Hamilton County in 1887. He was farming and owned his farm free of any mortgage. Only his youngest two children were still at home. Charles was widowed by the time of the 1910 census. His occupation was shown as minister, preaching the gospel. His youngest son Harvey C. and the son's wife Beulah were living with him in Mills County, Texas. By the 1920 and 1930 census, Charles was living with widowed daughter Sarah Batchelor. The informant on his death certificate was son in law, E. A. Obenhaus.

Excerpts from "A No Man's Land Becomes a County":
Mr. Miles resided in the Long Branch Community in Mills County during his early years of marriage. He later moved to Center City where he was ordained as a minister in the Baptist Church.

He continued his career as a farmer doing many chores during the week. These were happy days as Sundays he traveled riding his best saddle horse "Old Blue" to the place he was to preach carrying in his saddle bags a fresh shirt, song books, and other necessities. The rides were long; the paths were rough that he traveled. Sometimes he preached to his family and one other present but he preached to the few as earnestly as he did to a house full. The memory of the hours he spent in the pulpit were ever precious to him when he thought of the presence of the Holy Spirit as he preached to the early settlers of Mills County.

His memory will live forever in the hearts of the people of the County for he was a great Christian man because he served the Lord and the people in such a sweet spirit of loving kindness.

Reverend H.C. Miles once lived in the house that is the Methodist Parsonage. He moved south of Center City on a place he sold to J.T. Montgomery and bought the old home place north of Center City now owned by Jeff Watson. 9 10
