James's last residence was Egan, Johnson County, Texas. He had lived there 36 years. The informant on his death certificate was his daughter, Mrs. E. R. Bashers (Lena Mae Newby wife of Earl Bashers).

James married Susan Isabelle Roe, daughter of Monroe Roe and Lizzie Fletcher, about 1893. (Susan Isabelle Roe was born on 28 Mar 1878 in San Saba, San Saba County, Texas,⁷ died on 6 Jul 1960 in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas ^{7 8 10} and was buried on 7 Jul 1960 in Bethany Cemetery, Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas ^{9 10}.). The cause of her death was hypostatic pneumonia, apoplexy, essential hypertension.⁶
