Samuel came to Texas in 1839. He was an Indian scout. At the time of the 1850 census, Samuel was a farmer in Cass County, Texas. His household consisted of his wife and 9 children, the youngest two born in Texas 4 and 6 years earlier. At the time of the 1860 census, Samuel was a farmer in Dallas County, Texas. He had $1200 in real estate and $765 in personal assets. His household consisted of his wife and youngest 3 children. He lived and farmed next to married sons William, Samuel, and James. Farm laborer, Rusus Glanden, 19, was listed with him.

Samuel left Elizabeth and relocated in Springtown, Parker County, Texas. He married a much younger woman and lived out his life there. One online tree, RootsWeb.com Gedcom: brownfamily, gave the name as Rachel Elizabeth Shedd. Another tree, RootsWeb.com Gedcom: trevatreesh, gave her name as Rachel Elizabeth and showed a first marriage to William Shedd with the marriage to Samuel as 6 Oct 1870, Bell County, Texas.
