Had the birth date as Abt 1828 based on the 1850 census. Abt 1827 based on the 1856 and 1860 census.

Stephen was schooled in New York City. At the time of the 1856 Iowa state census, Stephen was a farmer in Clayton, Taylor County, Iowa. He was also a member of the militia. Levi Taylor, 16, lived with them and was farming also. At the time of the 1860 census, Stephen was a farmer in Marshall, Taylor County, Iowa. He had $800 in real estate and $150 in personal assets. He was a sergeant in the Union Army from Missouri.. He spent most of his army time in Jefferson City, Missouri, and moved to Warrensburg when the war was over. He worked for a time as a court clerk and also in an abstract office. At the time of the 1870 census, Stephen was a clerk in the circuit clerk's office in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. He had real estate valued at $400 and personal assets of $250. Stephen was widowed at the time of the 1880 census. He worked in an abstract office in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. On 1 Aug 1890, Stephen filed for a civil war pension as an invalid.
