He had a twin brother, Robert that died as a young boy when a tree struck by lightening fell on him. At age 13 he lived with his family in Fayette County, Georgia. By 1860, his father had moved the family to Panola County, Texas. William wasn't listed with them. Instead he seems to be listed in Garden Valley, Smith County, Texas, where he was a teacher at a common school. He had personal assets of $100. In the 1870 census, his birthplace was shown as Alabama. He was farming in Rusk County, Texas. He had real estate worth $500 and personal assets of $300. ![]() William married China Elizabeth Buckner, daughter of Garrett D.
