He was back in Bell County, Texas, at the time of the 1920 census. He rented. He was farming a general farm. At the time of the 1930 census, John was renting in Bell County, Texas. He continued to farm.

He lived in Temple, Bell County, Texas, the last 14 years of his life.

John married Lou Ella Lucinda Rebecca Roper, daughter of James H. Roper and Susie Parter, about 1903. The cause of her death was congestive heart failure due to arteriosclerotic heart disease.⁷
