General Notes:
These notes were provided to the minister for her funeral service:
Josephine Evans was born May 11, 1925 in Camp Wood, Texas, to Charlie and Rosa Lee Haggerton. She married Carl Evans on December 23, 1941 in Uvalde, Texas. They lived in Medina until 1943. From 1946 to 1948 they lived in Mills County. Then they moved back to Uvalde and lived there until 1952. In 1952 they moved back to Mills County permanently.
She was a very successful homemaker. She accepted people the way they were and never had a bad word out of her mouth about anybody (even if needed).
She was terrified of snakes. Jimmy as a young boy caught on and chased her around the house with a snake. She threatened him with a broom. When the children were fussing and fighting in the house like we shouldn't have been, mother got a broom and was going to thrash us with it. We all ran outside. Our pet yellow collie dog caught her by her dress tail. She said, "I'll get y'all when you come back in the house."
You would have to admire Josephine for getting her drivers license after all the kids were almost grown. The kids would always drive for her. The kids helped her learn to drive.
She was very superstitious about a black cat crossing the road and would not let the kids carry an ax in the house or walk under a ladder. All the kids remember having supper on the table when they got home at 4:30 whether it was beans or cornbread or biscuits. Then they had to go feed the stock. At other meal times she would honk the horn and we knew to come.
She was baptized at Spot Saylors tank and joined Trigger Mountain Church, setting a fine example for her children. She was always there to help with the grandkids. She was very supportive of her inlaws. She had good morals and high respect for people. She made sure her granddaughter made it to a school function on the last minute's notice. That meant a lot to her as a child.
When her house was remodeled, she would not let the door that Albert made when he was young be replaced. That door had to stay. Also when the porch was closed, she was upset because she could not see the animals and wild turkeys out of her picture windows. So another picture window was placed in the porch for her. She loved her ranch home on top of the hill in the back of the place where she could see on all sides.
Josephine married Carl Grady Evans, son of Albert E. Evans and Breta Allsup, on 23 Dec 1941 in Uvalde, Uvalde County, Texas. (Carl Grady Evans was born on 15 Apr 1921 in Center Point, Kerr County, Texas, died on 2 Aug 2006 in Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas and was buried on 5 Aug 2006 in Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas 3.)
