Murder/ Suicide Ruled in Death Here

A Bay City man shot his wife Thursday night outside of Wayne's Cafe, then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. Dead are Mrs. Mary Lou Williams, 37, and her husband Leon J. Williams, 43. Mrs. Williams was dead on arrival at Matagorda General Hospital, shot at least four times, police said. Leon Williams died at 4:10 a.m. today in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. The murder-suicide verdict was returned by Justice of the Peace D.B. Hinton. The shooting occured outside the local cafe about 10 p.m. following an argument both inside and outside the cafe, a witness told police. Mrs. Williams was shot in the head -- just above the left ear -- in the left side of the chest, in the left arm and once under the armpit, Chief of Police Barney Mason said. Williams shot himself in the right temple. A pearl handle .22 calibre pistol was used in both shootings. Mason said all six shells in the pistol were empty.

Police stated that the pair were separated. Mrs. Williams, The Tribune was told, lived at 2101 13th street, the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Miles. Williams address was listed on the Sargent Highway. The woman drove a school bus for the Yellow Cab Co. and had worked at Cain's, police said, and Williams was a pipefitter for Olsen Engineering Co. City Officers Lloyd Barr, Robert Foote and Jackie Williams found the Williams woman slumped in the front seat of her car when they arrived on the scene. Leon Williams was in a kneeling position beside the car, but slumped to the ground as the officers reached him.

The police witness said after the two had argued in the cafe, they left through the side door. The Williams woman got into a car police said belonged to her father. According to the statement by the witness, the two appeared to be arguing by the car. Williams pulled the gun and shot the woman, the report said. He then turned the gun on himself, police reported. Williams was first taken to Matagorda General for treatment, but was later transferred to the Galveston hospital. In addition to Mason, Barr, Foote, and Wiliams, Sheriff Jack Cole and Department of Public Safety Highway Patrolman Roy Wilkerson assisted at the shooting scene.

Service for Mrs. Williams will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Rick Blue of the Bay City Baptist Church will officiate. Internment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Besides her parents, Mrs. Williams is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Ludith Grube Miller, Jimmie Lue Grube, Nelda Lynn Grube, Carolyn Lee Grube, and Reva Mae Williams: one son , James Allen Grube: two grandchildren: one sister, Mrs. Donald Miller: and two brothers, Albert Kelly Miles and Taft Ervin Miles. Taylor Brothers is in charge of arrangements.
