At the time of the 1910 census, James and his son Elvis were general farmers in Mills County, Texas Katie, Thomas, and Lela were also still at home. By the time of the 1920 census, James had married Willie. He was farming with Thomas in Mills County, Texas. At the time of the 1930 census, James and Willie were living next to Thomas and Nina Booker. He was a stock farmer and owned his home.

The cause of her death was apoplexy which onset in 1929 and hypertension.⁹
