His father was born in Tennessee, his mother in Mississippi. His father died and his mother remarried to Hugh Simpson by the time he was 3 years old. Simpson was guardian of his estate which at the time of the 1860 census was valued at $200 in real estate and $150 in personal assets. They lived in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.

By the time of the 1880 census, James had moved to Texas (sometime before 1875). He was farming in Johnson County, Texas. He was married to Martha and had 4 children.

At the time of the 1900 census, James was a farmer in Johnson County, Texas. He owned his farm free of any mortgage. His household consisted of second wife Sallie, his children from his first marriage--James, Effie, John, and Lula, his wife's sons by her first marriage--James 11 and Fred 9 Boyd, Lula's sons Alic and Ernest Cummings, and his mother Elizabeth Simpson.

At the time of the 1910 census, James was a carpenter doing home building. He owned his home in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, free of any mortgage. His household consisted of wife, Sarah, and adult daughters Effie (or Offie) and Bertha. At the time of the 1920 census, he was a carpenter doing local work. He still lived in Cleburne in a home he owned. His mother in law Eliza Cummings, 89 born in Tennessee, lived with him and Sarah.

James married Martha Caroline Liles, daughter of Dr Frances Quince Liles and Martha Salinda Davis, on 27 Jul 1871 in , Johnson County, Texas.2 (Martha Caroline Liles was born on 2 Aug 1853 in , Newton County, Missouri and died on 24 Mar 1888 in Oklahoma.)
