  General Notes:

She was raised by Benjamin Shepherd Harrell and Sarah Head after their mother died.

In 1900 when she and Jesse were first married, they boarded with her step grandparents Benjamin and Sallie Herrell. Her sister Bertha M. Murphy, 13, was boarding there too. She and Mattie gave the same information about the parents. The father was born in Mississippi, the mother in Missouri.

Martha and Jesse became owners of the Shep Herrell place at Keene, Johnson County, Texas, and lived their married life there. In 1910, this same Sarah (Sallie) Herrell, b Nov 1828 in Alabama, was living with them and seems to be shown as mother to Jesse. His mother was Nancy Newby who died in 1889. Undoubtedly, the couple had a close relationship with this woman.

At the time of the 1930 census, Mattie was widowed. She and her son Alvin were shown to be farmers on a general farm. She owned the farm.
