• Military Service: Confederate States Army Company K, 19th Alabama Infantry: the Civil War. He was wounded at Shiloh. He was paroled 23 Sep 1862 from Green River Hospital near Munfordville, Kentucky.

James married Nancy Hanna Blackburn, daughter of Joel J. Blackburn and Nancy Eliza Hancock, on 4 Dec 1864 in , Blount County, Alabama, United States. (Nancy Hanna Blackburn was born on 6 Nov 1847 in , Blount County, Alabama, United States,^{2 6} died on 30 Jan 1919 in Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas ⁷ and was buried in Lanham Cemetery, Lanham, Hamilton County, Texas ⁷.). The cause of her death was cirrhosis.
