He was Christian. He was married. When Samuel registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he operated a service station for Standard Oil Co. in Stockton, California. He had a wife and small child and claimed an exemption for their support. At the time of the 1920 census, Samuel was paying a mortgage to own his home in O'Neal, San Joaquin County, California. He worked as a salesman for an oil company. At the time of the 1930 census, he was renting his home for $40 a month. He was a brakeman for the railway.
