General Notes:
William Zeno Stapleton enlisted in the confederate army in July of 1861 at Harvey's Creek, Colorado County. He was stationed at Velasco, Texas and released as a paroled prisoner of war on July 20, 1865, Columbus, Texas.
He applied for a 160 acres homestead land grant in 1874 in Wharton County on Sandy Creek. William Zeno also had a deed from Colorado County for a track of land from the estate of his father, William Stapleton.
He was killed on the upper Guadalupe River. The story goes that he lived on one side of the river which he had to cross when he went to town. He would let his horse swim the river while he would hold the reins and walk a cypress tree that was laying across the river. On the day of his death he lost his balance and fell on a limb that went into his lung.
