Emil's parents, William and Johana Berg, came to America in 1894 from Germany. At the time of the 1910 census, they were in Wilbarger County, Texas, where his father farmed. German was spoken in the home and no one in the family spoke English at that time.

When Emil registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was farming near Taylor, Williamson County, Texas. He gave his birth date as 22 Sep 1897. At the time to the 1920 census, they were living in Williamson County, Texas, where his father farmed. The census is marked that all family members could speak English.

At the time of the 1930 census, Emil was working in an automobile shop. He rented his home in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas, for $10 a month. His brother Frank was married to his wife's sister Viola and lived next to them. His occupation was shown on the death certificate as heavy equipment mechanic.

Social Security had his last residence as Robstown, Nueces County, Texas. Social Security showed the birth date as 26 Sep 1897.
