George's parents were James E. Alexander and Racheal Bell according to the 1925 Iowas state census. George was apparently unclear on his parent's birthplaces. He was fairly consistent in reporting his father's as Virginia, but on the 1930 census, he listed West Virginia. For his mother, he reported Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and United States.

In 1900, he and Lizzie were rooming with John and Maude Jones in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. He was a railroad conductor. At the time of the 1910 census, they lived in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa, next to her parents. George was a merchant in his own store. He owned his home free of mortgage. In 1920 he was a merchant, hardware store. His father and mother in law lived with them in Albia. He owned his home without mortgage. At the time of the 1925 Iowa state census, he owned his home free of mortgage. It was valued at $4000. He had 4 years of rural school education. At the time of the 1930 census, George was a retail merchant of hardware and implements in Troy, Monroe County, Iowa. He owned his home which was valued at $16,000.
