Miss Annis Turner, 82, of 727 Glenwood, a Western Colorado teacher for 52 years, died at 7:50 a.m. today in Mesa Manor. Ill for two months, she had been a patient there for two weeks.

Miss Turner retired in 1961 as principal of Hawthorne School, a position to which she was promoted in 1947 after teaching at Hawthorne since 1927. Earlier, she taught four years at Lowell School.

Miss Turner's career began in 1909 in a one-room school at Crystal Springs, near Carbondale, and progressed through a number of country schools, at Rifle Creek, Collbran, Little Creek, Rifle, Meeker and Salt Creek before she came to Grand Junction, in 1923. She earned a diploma from Grand Junction High School in 1909, and continued her education at Western State College, Denver University and Colorado State University, eventually earning both bachelor's and master's degrees.

In addition to her career, Miss Turner had been a member of P.E.O. since 1908; was a founder and charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, which she served as first president in 1940. She was also active in Colorado Education Association and the National Education Assn.

Miss Turner was born in Iowa July 24, 1980, and accompanied her family to Grand Junction as a child.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Arlene Griffith of Palisade.

At the time of the 1910 census, Anis was a public school teacher living with her parents in Allen, Mesa County, Colorado. At the time of the 1920 census, she was a public school teacher in South Rifle, Garfield County, Colorado. She was lodging with Carl and Rebecca Hamm. A week later she was counted with her parents in Collbran, Mesa County, Colorado, also. At the time of the 1930 census, she was a public school teacher in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado. She was lodging with Hattie L. Scott.

Social Security had her last residence as Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado. Listed as Anis Turner.
