General Notes:
Wilma Earlene Lee Head (July 9, 1921-October 2, 2013)
Wilma was the next to youngest of four children born to Robert E. and Ruth Lee, who were residing near Center City, Texas at the time. She graduated from high school at Star, Texas and went on to Howard Payne University on a band scholarship. Wilma jokingly said that she was glad that she did not have to play in their marching band because she wasn't sure that marching and playing the saxaphone at the same time was within her capabilities.
It was during Wilma's early childhood that she and Gerald Head began their lifelong friendship that resulted in a marriage lasting nearly 72 years. They were married in Goldthwaite on February 1st 1941.
Wilma supported her husband in the insurance business, raised her two children and was active in Mills County as a lifelong resident. In their retirement years she and Gerald enjoyed working on their farm, raising Suffolk sheep and growing pecans. Wilma was an avid gardener and many folks in Mills County took advantage of her green thumb by using her yard as a backdrop for wedding photos and receptions. She had many interests in her community and served as Treasurer on the Library Board for many years, was a member of the Garden Club, Tuesday Study Club, Women's Missionary Union and PTA.
She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. Wilma was soft spoken, with a gentle, humble and quiet demeanor but had the inner strength that comes with a devout faith. Her main focus was encouraging and loving her family. She especially enjoyed attending athletics, recitals, graduations and weddings of her grandchildren. We will miss the loving atmosphere of holiday celebrations in her home along with her delicious cornbread dressing, chocolate cake, and her "award winning" pecan pie.
A memorial service was conducted at the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. A private burial was held in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery prior to the service.
Gerald preceded her in death by only a few months. She also outlived her sister, NaVerne Lock and two brothers Avery and Bobby Lee.
Wilma is survived by one son, Gerry Head and his wife Stephanie of Goldthwaite, one daughter Helen Morris and her husband Jim of Lubbock, four grandchildren: Chip Head and wife Michelle, Jeffrey Head, Jennifer Bowden and husband Brad, Beckie Morris wife of the late James Gerald Morris, Justin Morris and wife April, along with 10 great grandchildren: Courtney and Shelby Head, Jae and Jansen Head, Nicole, Tommy, Major and Lindsey Bowden, Sarah Morris and Mason Morris along with a multitude of nieces and nephews and other significant family members. 2 5
