Lester received an accounting degree from Texas Tech University in 1942 and attended Harvard Graduate School in 1943. After serving in the Navy in WWII, he returned to Lubbock, Texas, and established Grimes Insurance Agency in 1948. He was serving as chairman of the board at the time of his death. He served on the board of directors of the Milam Children Training Center as well as many other community and civic organizations.
