At the time of the 1920 census, Emil took in boarders in his rented home in Port Arthur, Jefferson County, Texas. Emma Kraatz and her son August were among the boarders. His parents were born in Germany. His occupation was loader at an oil refinery. By the time of the 1930 census, he had married Emma and the family had moved to Montebello, Los Angeles County, California. He rented their home. He was a helper at a grease company. He was a veteran of WWI.

He registered to vote as a Democrat in Laguna Precinct No. 3, Los Angeles County, California, in 1934. The family's address was 3632 E. 5th St.
