James was listed on the 1870 and 1880 census as though his last name were Roberts. In 1880 he was a laborer on the farm. He was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Benton County, Mississippi, at the time of the 1900 census. He had been married 13 years and had 6 children. At the time of the 1910 census, James was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Benton County, Mississippi. Most of the children were involved in farming it. He had 8 children at that time. At the time of the 1920 census, James stated that he was paying a mortgage to own his home. He was farming a general farm in Ashland, Benton County, Alabama. On the 1930 census, James stated that he owned his home. The family lived on a farm. He and his son Charlie,who was back home, were farming. He was elected Supervisor of the Fourth District and was active in civic and church affairs.

James married Mary Georgetta Mathis, daughter of Jordan Wheeler Mathis and Margaret Viola Pankey, in Dec 1886 in Mississippi. (Mary Georgetta Mathis was born on 7 Dec 1863 in Mississippi,¹⁰ died on 25 Feb 1951 in Ashland, Benton County, Mississippi ¹⁰ and was buried in Liberty Cemetery, Ashland, Benton County, Mississippi ¹¹.)
