  General Notes:

In the 1910 census, Merton was listed as a farm laborer on a general farm. When he registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was farming for himself 1 mile east of Bland, Bell County, Texas. He claimed an exemption for the support of his wife and child. His address was Moffat, Texas. At the time of the 1920 census, Merton was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Bell County, Texas. At the time of the 1930 census, the family was living in Temple, Bell County, Texas. Merton worked as a truck driver hauling cedar posts. He rented his home for $15 a month. He was employed by the Texas State Highway Department at the time of his death. He had been living in Austin, Texas, for 14 years.
