Raymond D. Booker, 84, of Keokuk, died Thursday, January 8, 2004 at 4:10 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Raymond Booker was born on September 18, 1919 in Goldthwaite, Texas. He was the son of Willis E. and Allie Hudson Booker. He married Myrtle Aakbik in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She survives. He served with the United States Army during World War II as a Sergeant. He served in Normandy, northern France and in the Rhineland. He was employed as a machinist for thirty-four years with the Rock Island Railroad and retired in 1979. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk and the International Association of Machinists for over sixty-two years. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and seldom missed a game. He enjoyed coin collecting and going metal detecting with his dog.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Booker, of Keokuk, Iowa; three daughters, Sharilyn Carr and her husband, Bill of Keokuk, Marilyn Wixom and her husband, Bill of Keokuk, and Carilyn Booker-Wieland and her husband, Greg, of Princeton, New Jersey; grandchildren, David Skow of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Dana Davis of Honolulu, Hawaii, Melissa Krome of Keokuk, and Julee and Heidi Wixom of Keokuk; three step-grandchildren, Heidi, Jennifer, and Corry; several great grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Burlingame, of Mansfield, Massachusetts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; and one grandson, Ryan Lee Wixom.

Graveside services were Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites. Pastor Dale Thomas officiated. Burial followed the service.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Keokuk or to the Keokuk Humane Society.
