John immigrated to America in 1901 and became a naturalized citizen in 1917. His parents, Conrad Innerhofer and Margaret Eckelberger, were also born in Austria and German was his native language. His family settled in Pennsylvania at first. By 1910, his father had died and his mother was in Corning, Tahama County, California with the children. By 1920, his mother and siblings had moved to Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas.

When John registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was working for Signal Department 15 MK & T Railroad Company of Denison, Grayson County, Texas. He spelled his name Innerhoffer there. He was living in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. He was single and gave his mother as his nearest relative. He had not become a citizen yet and was listed as alien.He gave his birth date as 25 Nov 1893 (Social Security and his death certificate had 1894). He served during World War I.

At the time of the 1920 census, he was a machinist in an automobile company in Houston, Harris County, Texas. He was married to first wife Lena and had a son Eugene. At the time of the 1930 census, he was a layman in a machine shop in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. He was married to Gladys. He rented his home for $20 a month. He lived in Dallas the last 40 years of his life. He retired from the City of Dallas where he had worked as a machinist.
