Gottfried immigrated to Galveston, Galveston County, Texas, at age 24 in Oct 1869 from Germany on the Bark Iris. He was traveling with Ann Gertrude Krause, age 59, Justus Krause, 17, and Marie Krause, 16. He became a naturalized citizen in 1869 according to the 1900 census. At the time of the 1870 census, all but Marie were living with Karl and Elizabeth Koch's family in Comal County, Texas. His mother was a housekeeper. He and Justus were laborers in the field. At the time of the 1880 census, he was a farmer in Goliad County, Texas. He was farming in Travis County, Texas, in 1900. He owned his farm free of mortgage. C. G. Krause was the informant on his death certificate (probably grandson Clifton).

Gottfried next married Johanna Sultemeier, daughter of Herman Sultemeier and Hansmeier, on 15 Sep 1902 in Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, Texas. (Johanna Sultemeier was born on 12 Sep 1870 in Germany,⁷ died on 8 May 1943 in Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, Texas ⁷ and was buried on 9 May 1943 in Der Stadt Friedhof Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, Texas ^{7 8}.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of stomach, carcinoma of face, senility.⁶
