Rifle native Richard N. "Dick" George, 43, died Wednesday, Sep 21, 1988 in an accident while working on Eielson Air Force Base near North Pole, Alaska. He was a civilian employee with the 343rd Civil Engineering Squadron.
Dick was born Dec 16, 1944 in Rifle and grew up in this area, graduating from Rio Blanco County High School in 1962. He served in the US Army, including one tour in Vietnam with the Signal Corps. He received and honorable discharge on Sep 11, 1972.
In 1975 Dick moved with his family to Alaska and immediately fell in love with the North Pole area. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, and gardening, and also enjoyed bowling as a member of the Eielson Hillbilly Lineman team.
A memorial service was held Sep 26 at the Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home in North Pole. 1

Richard married Velvet Story, daughter of Arnold Story and Mildred Lyons.
