  General Notes:

At age 19, as recorded in the 1880 US Census, he was working as a miner in Missouri. In Aug 1882 a mining transfer was recorded from him to W. A. Shaw et al, 1/2 Endora, on Elk, in Summit County, Colorado. The Rifle Reveille reported in Sep 1898, "J. L. (E.) Brosiius, accompanied by his father came down from Aspen Wednesday and visited the ranch on Rifle creek. The old gentleman left last night for Oregon to visit his daughter." He was living in Aspen, Colorado in Jun 1899 and tending to his ranch interests in Rifle, Colorado. In Aug 1899, The Rifle Reveille reported, "J. E. Brosius is now a resident of Garfield county. He has concluded to quit mining in Aspen and will make his home on his ranch on Rifle creek. He will build a comfortable house on the ranch and will move his family here at once." The Rifle Reveille newspapers of Sept 1899 said he owned the Penz ranch. Mullins & Babcock were rushing work on J. E. Brosius' new brick house. At the time of the 1900 US Census, he owned his own farm in Garfield County, Colorado.

In Mar 1900, he joined a stockmen's organization which supported resolutions for the use of public lands and controlling flood waters for irrigation use. It met in Rifle.

In Nov 1903, the Rifle Telegram reported his shipment of cattle:
J. E. Brosius, one of the energetic cattle men of the Rifle creek district, returned Tuesday morning from Kansas City, where he had made a shipment of cattle. At one point on the way in to the big cattle market Mr. Brosious (sp) states that he found himself trailing in a train comprising sixtyfive cars of cattle. He stopped in Leadville when en route home to visit a few days with his brother.

At the time of the 1910 US Census, he was farming but he also had 14 boarders living there who were doing ditch work. Several of the neighbors were also boarding ditch workers. This must have been the time that the irrigation ditch behind the ranch was being put in. At the time of the 1920 and 1930 US Census, he was farming with son John H Brosius in Garfield County, Colorado. By 1935 he had moved to town and was living in the Winchester Hotel at 204 Railroad Ave, Rifle, Garfield County, Colorado. He was recorded there on the 1940 census. He had a third grade education and was no longer able to work.

"My grandfather lived in Aspen and worked in the lead mines there.--He and my grand mother moved to Rifle to a ranch 6 miles north of Rifle when my father was 7 years old. He lived his life there and sold the ranch to my father who lived his life there also."
Herbert Willard Brosius.

Lewis W. Brosius had a child, Cecil Thomas, in the chart for them. Apparently also had the parents sexes reversed.
