  General Notes:

William was a hunter, Indian trader and explorer. He owned land in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama. He also had a passport from the state of Georgia to go and trade there.

In 1771 he moved from Pennsylvania to Holston River Settlement, Washington District, Virginia, made a settlement in Turkey Cove in Powell'sValley in present Lee County, Virginia. On 4 Oct 1774 he was listed as a soldier at Elk Garden Fort (spelled Magee). He was living in Virginia. In 1775 he served under Col. John Neville in the Virginia Militia which marched on Ft. Pitt by order of Provincial Convention of Virginia. In 1782 he served with Capt. Daniel Boll's Company on the Pennsylvania line during the American Revolution. He was paid off at Romney, West Virginia as a private.

In 1786, he moved to Boyd's Creek, Tennessee, and established McGaughy's Fort about 13 miles southeast of Knoxville. After the death of Elizabeth, William moved with sons James Harvey and George Washington to Maury County, Tennessee.
